With talk of tariffs and lots of uncertainty in the air it’s time we highlight our best Canadian options for flooring. Luckily we have been on the Canadian bandwagon for some time now and have some great options for you so let’s buy Canadian flooring products!
HARDWOOD
Our beautiful country is large and vast with space to grow trees. In Eastern Canada we are fortunate to have mills that harvest, produce and sell wood all local to Canada.
When looking to buy local products it is important to know where the top veneer is harvested, the core material is harvested and where the product itself is manufactured.
Red oak, some white oak, maple, black walnut and hickory can all be grown in North America. Some white oaks come from China or Europe. We do have suppliers that ship sustainable wood floors in from Europe direct to Canada such as Boen hardwood.
PREVERCO
As a Canadian hardwood floor manufacturer established in 1988, they are committed to the environment. Their core strategy is proximity. They harvest here and they manufacture here in Canada. In addition, they have established a network of local partners that reuse their wood waste, chips and sawdust to make the most of every tree harvested. This makes it easy to buy Canadian flooring products.
MERCIER
Established 45 years ago by a cabinet maker by trade Mercier is now considered the pioneer of prefinished wood flooring. Their mill is in Drummondville Quebec and their finishing plant is in Montmagny Quebec. Like Preverco they use locally, sustainably harvested wood and are Greenguard Gold certified. They do have a few white oak products that come from Asia, however, if you stick with the local wood species you will be getting a very durable Canadian floor.
LAUZON
Founded in 1985 in the Outaouais region of Quebec Lauzon has run on a From Forest to Floor business model. They log from their ecologically responsible and sustainable forests and manufacture the wood in their Quebec facility.
CARPET
BEAULIEU
We are proud to carry Beaulieu carpet and have been recommending this brand for the past two years as it is a homegrown Canadian company. With products that are made in Canada by Canadians, they have been our favourite option. Most other carpet suppliers come in from large factories in Georgia USA which has created higher costs due to our poorly traded dollar.
Beaulieu offers their Tryesse carpet which is a proprietary solution dyed synthetic fibre. This carpet fibre has colour all the way through. This strand has exceptional stainproof ability because it’s stainproofing technology is part of the strand itself rather than just a coating.
Our current favourite is the Nature’s Connection line which is a Tryesse carpet that is meant to look like wool.
TILE
AMES TILE
One of our favourite Western Canada-based suppliers is Ames Tile & Stone Products. This distribution company was started in 1912 by Cyril and David Ames in Vancouver. They are committed to bringing tile in from mostly Italy and Spain to be distributed here in Western Canada.
TIERRA SOL
Tierra Sol Ceramic Tile is a Canadian company based in Calgary. They carry a variety of tile products. Their tiles are sourced from Europe and Asia and imported through their head office here in Western Canada.
